How to set up a YubiKey with Dropbox?

With hardware security keys you can get the additional protection of two-factor authentication to make your login procedure secure. Follow these step-by-step instructions to easily set up a YubiKey with Dropbox accounts.

By the end of this tutorial you will have enabled strong two-factor authentication, using a YubiKey with your Dropbox account.

Requirements

  • A computer with a USB port and the latest version of Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, or Microsoft Edge. *
  • A FIDO U2F-enabled Security KeyYubiKey 5 NFC, YubiKey 5C, YubiKey 5/5C Nano
  • A mobile phone to receive SMS with one-time passwords (or with Google Authenticator installed, to receive passwords by the app). Needed for the initial setup and backup.
  • A Dropbox account.

 

If two-step verification is not enabled in your Dropbox account, continue the next procedure to enable it. If two-step verification is enabled already, skip to Step 2.

 

Step 1: Enabling two-step verification

  1. Sign in to your Dropbox account.
  2. Click your profile picture in the top right of the screen.
  3. Select Settings
  4. Select the Security tab.

  1. Switch Two-step-verification to On.
  2. Click Get started.
  3. Enter your password.
  4. Choose the method of how you want to receive one-time passwords, by text message or mobile app.

Step 2: Adding a YubiKey for two-step verification

  1. Sign in to your Dropbox account.
  2. Click your profile picture in the top right of the screen.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Select the Security tab.
  5. In the Two-step verification section, next to Security keys, click Add. If this section is not visible, follow Step 1 to enable two-step verification.
  6. Enter your password.
  7. Insert your YubiKey into a USB port, then click Begin setup.

  1. Click Key inserted.
  2. Wait your YubiKey to begin flashing, then tap the gold button or edge.

 

Congratulations! You have now added a Security Key by Yubico to your Dropbox account. Now it will be easy for you to log in to Dropbox with strong second factor authentication. All you need to do is enter your username and password, touch the gold button or edge on your YubiKey, and you’re in.

 

What browsers versions support using YubiKey?

  • Google Chrome: starting from version 38
  • Mozilla Firefox: starting from version 60
  • Microsoft Edge: starting from build 17723
  • Opera: starting from version 40
